Pilot Annie and the Romance of Aviation
What kind of fashion do you picture when you think of air travel and, in particular, what would a woman pilot wear? To drill down a little further, how does a savvy, sexy, dog-loving, entrepreneurial aviatrix and local Collingwood celebrity like to dress to feel her best? How about slim-fitting jeans paired with a relaxed white v-neck T-shirt and topped off this season’s favourite long kimono jacket? Or maybe an eco-friendly tropical shirt dress by Desigual with a fedora and cute boots.
Meet Annie Rusinowski, better known as Pilot Annie to her legions of social media followers. She is a professional aviation blogger, social media influencer, and student pilot who co-owns her airplane, a Piper Cherokee 140. It was the romance of aviation that drew her to the friendly skies seven years ago and it was romance plain and simple that lured Annie to even friendlier Collingwood just two years ago. Indeed, one of her plane’s co-owners is her fiancé.
Rusinowski’s mantra is “If you make the conscious decision to do something, you can accomplish anything you want to.” Her very popular social media accounts have become a place for female empowerment and Pilot Annie loves seeing more women taking their place in fields that are traditionally dominated by men. She especially loves seeing more and more women entering flight school.
A frequent shopper at Coriander Style, Annie’s invitation to dress her for her recent photo shoot at the Collingwood airport saw us jump at the chance. Of everything she wore in these shots, Annie found a few favourites, including the distressed sleeveless denim jacket and the flower shirt, the latter of which she took home to her own closet. Rusinowski loves “bright, pop-y colours” and favours clothes with a vintage vibe that are also “fun, different, and comfortable” to balance her days of wearing grease smeared and gas spattered work gear around the hangars.
Of her recent modelling experience, Annie shares that she really appreciated the chance to exhibit more facets of her fashion style. Her scene stealing sister model, sporting only a cheeky grin and gorgeous caramel tresses, is Koda, her fiancé’s dog. We think Annie is rocking the romantic aviatrix look in this sweet watercolour denim jacket.
