The first granny squares came about when yarn scraps and unraveled fibres were carefully saved so that they could be crocheted into small squares that could be reused in something useful like a warm crochet coat. Granny squares have been around since 1897, but they’re currently popping up everywhere – they're even in this notched-collar button-up crochet coat by Charlie B!
